The snow cannons were fired up last Monday at 5 in the morning on the Planai, and this Sunday (November 23) the winter season will open in the Styrian capital of skiing. Mother Holle came to the aid of the largest snow facility in Austria, which boasts 612 artificial snow making machines.

Regardless of how vigorously Mother Holle shakes her bedding over Schladming, the ski season will definitely start on the Planai this Sunday. The cable car facilities around the mountain station will start their operations (3 cable cars/lifts). The largest “snow factory” in Austria, with 612 artificial snow making machines currently in use, enables ski operations after a mere 70 hours of snowing time. An unbelievable 200.000 cubic meters of snow is produced every day, which roughly equals 20.000 truckloads per day.
Therefore, ski operations will start as of Sunday. Naturally, there will also be ski operations during the week. According to weather reports, the coming 6 days will remain very cold, which means that additional ski pistes will open as of next week.
The investments of the Planai are also very impressive: a total of over € 23 m was invested in the infrastructure of this winter season, in order to create additional service for the guests. Amongst other features on the Planai is the most modern car park, with approximately 500 parking spaces, which is currently being constructed directly at the Planai Stadium. Another feature is the so-called Tele-Mix cable car facility on the Hochwurzen. This cable car sports sequences of three chairs, followed by a gondola.
