…the Dachstein was a 3000m high mountain 60 years ago? In the meantime has the Dachstein shrunk? Its a fact that although on old maps you will find a height of 3004m, its current height on newer maps is just 2996 m. The reason: In the 30s and 40s the measurement was taken from the North Sea upwards, whereas today the height is measured from the nearer lying Adriatic. This results in a differencr of 8 metres altitde and makes the difference between being a 3000m mountain and not.

… the erected tow lift pylons move with the flow of the glacier? To ensure the course of the facility is correct the cable movement is constantly measured and the cable lengths then altered by machines. As a resultpf the continuous deviation of the glacier the pylon constructions are reset in ice annually to counter balance the flow of the glacier. The movement of the glacier is dependent on several factors, especially the power of the ice and the inclination and properties of the terrain. The largest annual glacier movement can be found at 3 of the Schladming Glacier Lift pylons and the deviation is that of 2 metres.
…the piste machines of the Dachstein Glacier are filled with easily biodegradable hydraulic oil to avoid damaging the environment. Should even just a small amount of oil escape then the contaminated snow is removed and is transported away on a designated machine. This means we can be sure that the environment is not being negatively affected by the service of our piste machines.
