Planai – A retrospective

Planai & Hochwurzen

A world full of events and entertainment ...
During the course of the winter season, around 10 large events and a lot of smaller ones have taken place on the Planai with a few thousand viewers. The Planai Classic (competition for Old-timers and skiing legends), Austrian Winter giants (power training competition),… take the lead.

In retrospect 2007/08:

1. and 2. December 2007: Land of the Mountain ski tour opening atop the glacier of Dachstein. Test current alpine equipment, practice looking for buried people with mountain guides, guides ski tours and expand your alpine knowledge by listening to speeches about security: the ski tour opening 2006 on Dachstein was a meeting place for novices and pros.

1. and 2. December 2007: Krone Wedeltage (Wedel Days) for "Krone" subscribers atop the Planai under the best conditions.

8. December 2007: Pink live from Schladming
The appearance of superstar Pink at the Planai stadium was already a sensation in itself, as she was cheered on by more than 7,500 excited fans. The big highlight before the concert, however, was the opening of the world unique “music slopes” by Pink herself.

After Pink’s arrival in Schladming, she first went up the Planai – obviously in a pink cable car with the Planai cable cars. The manager of Planai Railways Komm.-Rat Dir. Albert Baier and Mayor Jürgen Winter officially welcomed the rock star. With a powerful punch of the starting button, Pink officially opened the new music slopes – with her hit “Get the Party Started” – while the first skiers skied down into the valley. The music slopes was now officially opened to all skiers.
In an interview with journalists (a total of 120 media representatives, photographers and both local and international TV teams), Pink – who came with husband, Carey Hart – was in a great mood. At her concert, which took place at the Planai stadium, the supporting band “Excuse me Moses” got the fans all warmed up – some of them had been waiting since 7 in the morning at cold temperatures for Pink, in order to get  a really good spot. Pink herself gave an impressive show on her huge stage with great light effects.

15. December 2007: Austrian Winter Giants. The strongest men in Austria compete at the Planai Stadium for this title.

14. to 16. December 2007: Krone Wedeltage (Wedel Days) for "Krone" subscribers and companions atop the Planai

4. and 5. January 2008: Planai Classic
After 52 old-timer teams completed a distance of 130 km on January 4, the Automobilklassement along two mountain stretches was decided on January 5. The first 20 of the Automobilklassement were drawn by 20 skiing legends at the grand finale at the Planai stadium. The former ski idols carried two huge gates under floodlights, where the second run had to be copied to the one hundredth in time of the first one. A combined evaluation of car driving and skiing was thus created.

For Franz Klammer, the Planai is historical soil: In December 1973, he won his first downhill race at the World Cup with an average speed of 111,25 km/h. Up to March 14, 1993, (Armin Assinger in Sierra Nevada), this was a world record for downhill racing. Apart from Emperor Franz, the following also stood at the gates: Hans Knauss, David Zwilling, Hans Enn, Michael Tritscher, Reinhard Tritscher, Hans Kirchgasser, Maria Theurl-Walcher, Christiane Mitterwallner, Ingrid Stöckl, Mag. Ernst Riedelsberger and Reinhold Bachler.

13. to 15. January 2008: The winegrowers on the pistes. Our innkeepers are not only interested in cooking and skiing – as a Styrian, he also enjoys presenting Styrian products. Winegrowers, wine and wine taverns are presented at the Styrian Wineland atop the pistes at the 4 – Mountain Ski Swing. Ausg’steckt wars’s from 10.-12. January 2007.

12. January 2008: Mountain Freak and Bavaria. A varied program which leads you through a varied ski day: DSV-Carving and telemark workshops, skis test with up-to-date models, snow fun with the Bavaria 3 presenters as well as a freak-style contest! A unique Après party is provided afterward! The Bavaria 3 DJs  will provide you with all the right rhythms and they will rock live on stage at the Hohenhaustenne!

20. January 2008: ORF "Sport am Sonntag" LIVE from the Planai stadium, with Mario Matt, Benjamin Raich, Rainer Schönfelder, etc.

22. January 2008: The Night race – The Men’s World Cup Night Slalom atop the Planai was a very special experience. Around 50,000 fans did not let the weather bother them as they turned the World Cup race into one of the most energetic ones ever. While the slalom stars viewed the sloped and prepared themselves fro the race, the fans flowed into Planai stadium and occupied the areas right along the stretch. All skiers were applauded and cheered for – sensational atmosphere along the runs, in Planai stadium, at the World Cup mile, and in the new Hohenhausantenne. The Night race atop the Planai – an absolute fantastic event, a dream in red-white-red – naturally, in particular for winner Mario Matt.

4. to 6. February 2008: Juche – the Styrian apple visits the snow again. The apple farmers from Puch bei Weiz present their products to different Genuss Specht managers atop the Planai. On Sunday during a welcome evening, there was a hot air balloon ride with an apple balloon.

9. to 23. February 2008: “With 3 through your holiday week“ promotion. Free of charge UMTS test mobile rental at the Planai base station and numerous promotional campaigns for our guests: 3snowball competition, 3igloo, 3Speed Contest along our quick schuss route, 3ski race along our permanent ski race track, 3ski massage, 3toboggan evening along our 7 km long, illuminated natural toboggan route along atop Hochwurzen, 3Hüttengaudi, and a lot more…

29. März 2008: The tour members of Austria met on Saturday, the 29.03.2008, atop the Dachstein in order to discover the best amongst themselves. The Dachstein Xtreme is the figure head of competitions in ski climbing in Austria. It is considered to be the most difficult ski tour race in the eastern Alps. Along 16,9 kilometres, athletes have to overcome 1.960 meters in height, with the highest point leading up to Dachstein. At 3.000 meters, Dachstein is the highest mountain in Upper Austria and Styria. After the success of the previous year, where the Dachstein Xtreme even conducted World Cup Races, 110 competitors were ready to conquer the mountain summits this year.

March 30 to April 5, 2008: Around 800 participants of the 6th Alpine-Adriatic winter sports week met at the slopes. They were from schools located in Friaul-Julysch-Venetien, South Tyrol, Croatia, Slovenia, Vas, Baranya, Styria, and Carinthia.
