Awards
Awards upon awards for the Planai!
Not only does it snow a lot on the Planai, but it is also showered with many awards. Once again, we were able to take home a lot of awards for the winter season of 2007/2008.

  Planai wins Tourism Marketing Oscar

The Planai railways are currently swimming on a wave of success: record season, World Championship approval and the seventh award within one year only. Last Tuesday (3 June 2008) the Planai railways received the award in gold of the worldwide hardest competition for tourism marketing. The Planai TV spot „Vorfreude“ (German for anticipation) won before global players such as TUI or ÖBB.
This competition, brought to life by the TAI (Tourism Industry Austria & International) some 23 years ago, is known as the hardest competition worldwide, since the 263 submitted works were evaluated by a professional jury and a public jury, 5,000 votes altogether. The Planai could win over both the professional jury, resulting in the gold medal „Signum laudis“ and also the public jury with a majority, resulting in another „Signum laudis in gold“ award. Eventually, this translated into the 1st place of the competition as a whole. The main award, a crystal sculpture designed by Mag. Silvia Rehrl from Vienna and manufactured by Swarovski.
This highest award is added to other awards won during the past year: Gold for „Fit im Job“ (Fit on the job), “Antenne Award” for the radio campaign, the “Tourismus-Innovationspreis” (Tourism Innovation Award) of the federal state Styria (Ice palace), Green Panther 2007, International Ski Run Quality Seal, ÖKO Award during the Alpine Conference in Alpbach and the Marketing Innovation Award.
Managing Director KoR Dir. Albert Baier says: „It is not our priority to win awards, but to offer the best product on the market to our customers. If this goal is also honoured with awards, that is even nicer for us. In terms of marketing we often compete against big international companies. We do not have to hide in comparison and are well positioned in the market“.
The Planai TV spot running both on TV and in the cinemas has been produced by the local creative, Gernot Langs and convinced above all with its humorous content. The spot can be viewed under www.planai.at.

The Planai railways do not employ big advertising agencies but instead do most of the activities in form of a „one stop shop“ internally in the marketing department. Partners are consulted for individual projects.
It should be mentioned that the newly established marketing company Schladming-Dachstein has also received an award in the scope of this competition: the first place of the public jury in the Internet category.

Number 1 award from „Fit im Job“ (Fit on the job) for the Planai railways.

Since 2006, the Planai railways have had the health project „Gesundes Planai“ (Healthy Planai). In order to promote health amongst the employees different programs, courses and lectures are on offer. Now the efforts of the enterprise were awarded the 1st place at the Styrian Health Award – Fit on the job“.
More than 60 enterprises applied for the award in four different categories (according to number of employees). In category 3 (51-250 employees), the Planai railways unexpectedly won the 1st place, ex aequo with KWB from Eastern Styria.
The offerings of the „Healthy Planai“ concept include training how to lift heavy weights, back training, Yoga, lectures about avalanches, dancing lessons, wine seminars, ski gymnastics and cooking courses for men as well as climbing, biking, running and medical fitness tests. The program is open to all employees of the enterprise (including seasonal workers), and their partners and pensioners of the enterprise. Heidi Oberlojer is very active und engages in project management in order to prepare an extraordinary program for her co-workers. The sports physician Dr. Georg Fritsch has been involved into the health project from the very beginning. Managing Director Komm.-Rat Dir. Albert Baier supports the “Healthy Planai” concept as well and is pleased about the award by the chambers of industry.

Planai scores another success with radio campaign

Every year, the radio station Antenne Steiermark organizes the big "Radio Award". There were 4000 different advertisement spots to choose from, but only 200 made it into the competition. Again, Planai-Bahnen (Planai rails) and Skiamade emerged as award winners.
Planai has already garnered many awards over the past months: winner of the big innovation competition of the Steiermark (Dachstein Eispalast), Green Panther award of the marketing industry (Planai), international ecological award at Forum Alpbach, "Fit on the Job" award of the chamber of commerce with the project "Healthy Planai", award of the international slope quality seal, innovation award for marketing, Maecena cultural award, distinction as a women and family-friendly work place, two marketing Oscars etc..Now another award is added to the line-up: The Dachstein ad which is inspired by the national anthem won the approval of the jury once more and as a follow-up to the winning spot of the previous year this results in yet another spot on the winners' rostrum. Renown companies such as Agip, Telekom Austria, Mediamarkt, Intersport Eybl, etc. have also received awards. "We are extremely pleased that the jury has rewarded us for our efforts yet again. But what is more important is that our guests enjoy themselves and visit us to experience our slopes. And we can say that they do and in ever increasing numbers", comments the Planai management. The award-winning spot can also be heard on the internet. Visit www.planai.at. (Community – Planai Songs).

Planai wins with the Dachstein Ice Palace

The Dachstein Ice Palace won Styria’s as well as the Austrian Federal Chamber of Commerce’s big Tourism Innovation Award. A total of 53 projects were submitted, and 11 reached the finals. The award ultimately went to the Ice Palace.
The determining factor in this competition was the truly unique idea of depicting the inner recesses of a glacier, the project’s presentation, as well as the outstanding economic success of the Ice Palace. Even though the Ice Palace has only been open for a few months, over 50,000 guests have already visited. KoR Dir. Albert Baier, manager of the Planai Hochwurzen Railway GmbH, accepted the award on behalf of the entire Planai and Dachstein team.
Schladming was represented twice at the awards ceremony. At the Mountain Bike World Cup, which also took place on the Planai, Schladming took second place. Werner Madlencnik, Thomas Stiegler, and Esther Schachner, all of Mountainbike OK, were very pleased upon receiving the honour. The Schladming Mountain Bike World Cup is a “Green Event”, and duly impressed the members of the jury.

Green Panther Awards at the Planai Railway

The Green Panther is considered to be the most difficult national competition in the fields of marketing and advertising in Austria. Naturally, Planai Hochwurzen Railway GesmbH were overjoyed upon receiving the Green Panther. Planai Hochwuzen Railway GesmbH were awarded for their Dachstein radio campaign. The creative radio campaign, which projected the Styrian provincial hymn like an opera, impressed the jurors. There were a total of 331 submissions. The Green Panther awards ceremony took place in the Graz town hall with over 800 guests.

International Seal of Approval for the slopes of Planai

For 14 years, ski areas and regions of the European Alps have been anonymously but comprehensively tested in an “International Ski Area Test”. The test for the winter season of 2006/2007 brought an extremely pleasing result for the Planai Hochwurzen Railway. Planai slopes boss, Bernhard Schupfer, and Hochwurzen slopes manager, Günter Pekoll, were awarded with the “International Slope Seal of Approval”, as well as an additional honour for the care and maintenance of slopes.
The “International Ski Area Test” is the only test in the European Alps, which independently and comprehensively analyzes snow sports areas and regions. Approximately 45% of the examined regions are situated in Austria, around 25% in Italy, and around 20% in Switzerland. The remaining 10% are shared between Germany, France, etc. During the winter of 2006/2007, 220 testers and designated jurors assessed a total of 16 areas. In the meanwhile, the test have become a fixed and recognized criterion for the cable car economy in Europe. During the awards ceremony at Casino Innsbruck in April, Planai slopes manager, Bernhard Schupfer, and Hochwurzen slopes boss, Günter Pekoll, were presented with the “International Slope Seal of Approval”, as well as an additional honour for the care and maintenance of slopes.

  Planai Railway takes Gold

Award for the summer offers at Dachstein

Dachstein Sky Walk, sun rise breakfasts atop Dachstein, rides into the sunset, the expansion of climbing offers – these factors and a lot more were offered during the last few years at Dachstein. The Dachstein railway was awarded the “Summer Climber of the Year” at an international competition. The successful “International Ski Area Test” in cooperation with the specialist magazine Seilbahn & Bus Tourismus (Cable Car & Bus Tourism) have become a fixed criterion for the Alpine cable car economy, especially in Austria, Switzerland, Italy and France. Since 2004, alpine holiday destinations have been anonymously assessed in regards to their attractiveness.   The Dachstein railway was voted “Climber of the Year 2006” by a jury due to its successful summer offers – new viewing platforms (along) Dachstein Sky Walk, sun rise breakfasts atop Dachstein, new fixed rope routes, improved climbing routes, guided glacier hikes, etc. A further attraction for Dachstein’s guests opened in the summer of 2007 – the new Dachstein Ice Palace. Ing. Erwin Schnepfleitner, Ing. Hans Nebel, Josef Zörweg, Heidi Oberlojer and Mag. Barbara Prugger accepted the awards and a wonderful crystal cup at the awards ceremony at the Casino Innsbruck.

International Ecological Award for Planai Railway

In the context of the IX. Alpine Conference in Alpbach, the Planai Hochwurzen Railway received an acknowledgement award from the “Pro Natura – Pro Ski” trust. The reason was the execution of an eco-audit in the ski area, Federal Minister Josef Pröll accepted the award.

Apart from the Planai Hochwurzen Railway as the only Austrian participant, participants from the ski areas of Adelboden (Switzerland), Malbun (Liechtenstein) and Oberstdorf (Germany) were awarded for their participation in eco-audit.
The eco-audit is a comprehensive environmental assessment. Planai Railway was the first ski area to position itself as a “green cable car operation”, and already voluntarily participated in this “ecological ski area auditing” in 2002. In the context of this audit, all corporate divisions are assessed for their environmental compatibility. This can range from plant variety along the ski pistes to the breeding behaviour of birds and the reforestation of the entire area. The eco-audit issues the Planai Railways an outstanding, exemplary certification in all environmental aspects.
Owing to the support of the four ski area, the trust of “Pro Natura” enabled the compilation of a manual for the ecological assessment and revaluation of ski areas.

UCI Award: Schladming/Planai top at Event Assessment

Even the UCI – the world cycling organisation – was impressed that Schladming, who first participated in the mountain bike world cup in 2004, came in second during the host assessment of the downhill and 4-cross, only to be beaten by Fort William (Scotland).
The international mountain bike media, athletes, and staff with over 100 entries from around the world spread roses around Schladming. OK-boss, Werner Madlencnik, was flattered: “We are ahead of renowned mountain bike host locations such as Mt. St. Anne (Canada), which has hosted the mountain bike downhill event twelve times.” World cup event coordinator, Christophe Burri (France), was not surprised that the Styrians came second place as a host location. Schladming had already made a good name for itself during other large events.

  Excellent Austrian Summer Rail

Image ContentOnce the summer arrives, Austria’s mountains usually become a lot more quiet and calm. However, since the establishment of the working group of summer railways at the marketing forum of cable cars in Austria in 2001, the summer has increasingly gained in significance within the branch. In the past 4 years, qualitative summer offers in parts of Austria have been developed and summer operations have been awarded, which have become a great complement of Austria’s tourism.

For the certification, every operation has to fulfil a 100 point criteria catalogue that is based on high quality offers from the mountain. Every mountain is assigned to a special experience repertoire group, which concentrates on different guest groups. This can range from regional culinary delights to special theme hikes or health checks on the mountain to alpine children’s adventure worlds or combination tickets for mountain and lake experiences.

The Dachstein glacier railway could fulfil all the necessary criteria and was thus awarded the Austria Summer Rail Award. This award is presented every 3 years (2006-2008).

  Planai-Hochwurzen-Rail awarded with culture award!

On September 27, 2005, the culture sponsoring award entitled „Maecenas Steiermark“ was presented. The Planai Hochwurzen Railway was awarded, among 40 participants the acknowledgement award for the project Dachstein:Cult.
The „Maecenas Steiemark“ was presented, together with the imitative „Wirtschaft für Kunst“ in cooperation with Styria and the city of Graz, to companies who are involved in the promotion of cultural projects, and this took place for the first time in Styria.
Our project „Dachstein:Cult“ with Europe’s cultural base on the Dachstein glacier could win over the hearts of the jury and we subsequently received our award.
The awards were presented by governor Klasnic and the Graz councilman Mag. Dr. Christian Buchmann. Heidi Oberlojer accepted the award on the behalf of our company. She had been interviewed beforehand by Barbara Rett (ORF Kultur) about her experiences with artists from the Dachstein glacier.

Pro-women and most family friendly operations of Styria 2003

Image ContentThe promotion of equal chances in the working world as well as family friendly measures in companies is very important to Planai Railways. Operations profit from pro-women and family-friendly regulations through economic advantages: motivated employees, a decrease in the cost-intensive fluctuation rates, less sick leave, etc.

The Planai Railways was awarded for its efforts in 5 criteria such as “working hours”, “advanced training”, “maternity leave and return”, “family-friendly measures”, “health and other measures” were decided by an expert jury, who evaluated the individual criteria.

  Innovation award for Marketing (2004)

In the year 2004, the Planai team was presented with another significant award. The MMGA (Moser Mediengroup Austria) have been conducting ski area tests since 1996 in the entire alpine area, and this has become a fixed criterion for all ski areas – in the scope of an extensive, anonymous test, all kinds of corporate areas are tested until a final grade or evaluation is given to the company.
Decisive for the jury’s decisions were the entire appearance of the company, both internally and externally, as well as permanent professional public work (also in crises cases), which differ substantially from competitors.
The framework for the award ceremony was the filled-up Burg Kaprun. Nearly all ski regions of the Alps were present, whereby a considerable part of the guests came from Switzerland and Italy.

For the Planai Railways, this is a high distinction and the evidence that the permanent efforts and investments paid off. A practiced mission statement, ongoing corporate design (from the prints to the orientation system), creation and use of modern communication channels such as the internet (up to 2,3 million page views per month on www.planai.at) as well as high investments in further training for employees, who will as of this year, attend the Planai Academy, are the foundation for the service philosophy of the company. In the past winter, nearly 300 employees from the Planai Railway region were employed.
